A gift commissioned for Tony From To Be Whole, chapter 5: mizutanitony.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=72#/d4y9jl2 I want to hug Leela so hard T^T
Commentary from Tony: "Probably the simple and easiest one to deal with really.
Most of the times when people write military heroes, or heroes in general, they're never shown as people contemplating or reflecting on their actions. They just get up and do the job or you hear a mention of it and never think of it again. So when Arrival happened and I knew I'd need to make mention of it, I thought to myself how would someone actually react.
I remember reading that the pilot of the Inola Gay, the plane that dropped the bombs on Japan during World War 2, never lost a nights sleep over what he did because we were at war and he was following orders, and I can agree with that. He was given the order to push the button that dropped the bomb and went on his way, but at the same time I wondered how many people would really be able to deal with a decision like that.
Badass commander who has saved the galaxy twice or not, I figured Leela would reflect on her actions. ON the fact that despite knowing the time doing such a thing and killing three hundred thousand people would weigh heavily on her mind and that she'd lose her composure and allow herself to just fall to pieces, especially after a mission like the Collector Base. Add on things like actually dying, Akuze, taking part in missions on the Blitz, her past, she's been tempered but even steel breaks after so many blows."
I really think Tony has a point there, that really is the way we often see those kinds of heroes, isn't it? So this definitely needed to be done! Lovely expression on Garrus' face there, I'm sure he'll oblige.
It's hard to assign flaws to heroic characters who are our ideal combination of strength, wisdom and bravery. Leela's a great character because of her insecurities!
Not sure I'd think of them as flaws myself, perhaps more like traits that give the characters flesh and substance and make them human. I suppose in a way that might be the description of flaws in a super hero.
Really looking forward to reading this now. I'll bookmark it right away.
